One Small Shift · Issue 01
The question that isn't nagging
How to ask about school without your teenager hearing pressure.
You know the moment. They're home, the bag's on the floor, and before you've even decided to, you've asked it. "Have you done your homework?" We ask because we care. But what we mean and what they hear are often two different messages. They don't hear the care. They hear a checkpoint.
So here's the small move. Swap the question that checks up for one that opens up. Instead of "have you done it," try "what's been the hardest thing to get your head around this week?" It's after the same territory, but it hands them the wheel.
The one small shift this week
Swap one "have you done it?" for one "what's it actually like right now?" Ask it once, then stop talking and listen.
